Bogardus developed social distance scale to assess the distance between people of different nationalities,linguistic groups,social groups etc.For example people from the north will prefer close ties with the people from the north.and same is true of religious and social groups.It was used to assess social distance among people from different states in India,who speak different languages,but have similar cultural heritage.It was observed that the closest relationship(in marriage)is desired among people speaking the same language(Hindi-Hindi).Further the geographical distance between the states,greater is the distance socially.stereotypes about people reflected in literature,media,films,TV affect people's judgements of distance..However there is other side of the story too.Tremendous technological progress in the field of communication,transit facilities has brought people much closer today socially.Political relationships among nations also affects the views of people from the concerned nations.
